THUNDER — EXPERIMENTAL LINUX LAPTOP BUILD

Extract the entire ZIP to a writable folder. In a terminal in that folder:

    bash ./run-thunder.sh

No Rust toolchain, compilation, root access or installer is required.
Requirements: Intel/AMD x86-64 Linux, glibc >= 2.39 (Ubuntu 24.04 or newer),
a Vulkan-capable GPU with its Linux driver/Vulkan loader installed, and an
X11 or Wayland desktop with its normal runtime libraries and CA certificates.
This is NOT a Windows, macOS, ARM, or universally portable Linux build.
It was built on Ubuntu 24.04; other laptop hardware has not been certified.

MAPBOX
No token is included. Copy your existing .mapbox-apitoken privately to your
laptop's home folder, or point CHASE_MAPBOX_TOKEN_FILE at its location:

    CHASE_MAPBOX_TOKEN_FILE=/path/to/.mapbox-apitoken bash ./run-thunder.sh

Keep this token out of shared ZIPs and source control. Without it, Mapbox is
disabled and OpenStreetMap is available without an account. Choose the provider
in Map layers. The clean package intentionally contains no cached map tiles.
Internet access is needed for live radar, warnings, SPC outlooks and new maps.

STARTUP / TESTING
Starts with live radar (not archived radar or synthetic warning overlays).
Alerts > Appearance contains style previews and isolated Test selected
alert actions. These test warnings are not injected into the live alert list.
The preview background is real archived radar, explicitly labeled not live.
Full historical radar files/event presets are not included in this small ZIP.
Legacy archive keyboard shortcuts will not load their unbundled datasets.

CURRENT FEATURES
Bottom-bar Search / Route, experimental GPS progress/ETA, off-route indication
and manual rerouting. GPS accepts serial or UDP NMEA; connection settings save
on Connect / apply. GPS information-bar fields and nearest-radar following are
configurable. Serial device permissions must be set by the computer owner.
Observations offers native RAP and satellite layers synchronized to radar time.
Storms > Event library imports NOAA tornado records by year. Your desktop's
database is not bundled; import the desired years on the laptop. Remote radar
links are downloads, not automatic replay. Cached research replay requires
separately prepared files.

KNOWN ISSUES
Volume Sweep may trail Sweep by one to two minutes. Session switching can still
cause a GPU-device-loss crash. These issues are recorded for later investigation.

DATA
Downloaded map/radar caches are written under this extracted folder's data/.
UI preferences and alert styles use your Linux user configuration directories;
telemetry uses your user state directory unless CHASE_STATS_DB overrides it.
The ZIP contains no API keys, user preferences, GPS data, logs or radar cache.
Error-only diagnostics: thunder-errors.log beside the executable (rotated).
Machine/GPU specifications: thunder-machine.json. Review before sharing.
Application > Settings > Application updates accepts your publisher's HTTPS URL.
See docs/Updates-and-error-logging.md for hosting and installation instructions.

This remains experimental software, not a sole source for operational warnings.
No SDR/SAME implementation or physical GPS hardware certification is included.

Map attribution: Mapbox / OpenStreetMap; see THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt and the app.

SOUND DESIGN
Bulletin Studio is bundled. Launch it from Alerts > Sounds,
or run ./bulletin-studio. Product recipes autosave in your user config folder.
Preview needs paplay or aplay. Export WAVs and attach them in Thunder.
No personal sound files or recipes are included in this package.
